In thrilling fashion, the USC Varsity Ice Hockey team beat Franklin Regional 9-8 in overtime to advance the AA Finals of the Penguins Cup. The game was truly an epic battle with back and forth action all night.
The Panthers took an 8-7 lead with just over 3 minutes to play and looked to advance until Franklin Regional scored with the goaltender pulled to tie it with just 29 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Quinn Giacobbe scored his 4th goal of the game to seal the win and give USC its first appearance in the Penguin Cup Finals since 2011.
Quinn Giacobbe had 6 points on the night and was the overtime star, but he had tremendous support from the rest of the team. Devin Rohrich had 2 goals and 2 assists and Joey Pulit, Colton Shiry and Chase Wucher all chipped in goals. Anthony Carone and Sam Sweet both had 3 assists each setting up many chances for the Panthers.
USC will play Pine-Richland in the finals. The game will be held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry on Monday, March 18 at 8:30pm. Tickets will be sold in advance and details will be forthcoming.
